The Ramifications of Sulphation
Sulphated batteries cause alternators, starter motors and electrical components to fail, this is because a sulphated battery will cause the battery voltage to be depressed and the internal resistance of the battery to increase.
Industry statistics show that sulphation is the main cause of premature battery failure.
The knock-on effects:
- Alternators work at higher current for longer trying to charge the battery.
- Battery voltage and overall system voltage will rise slowly.
- Heat is generated as a result of high internal resistance and high alternator current.
- Battery electrolyte will boil off as a result of the heat during charging
- Battery plate warping will occur as a result of the heat during charging.
- Vehicles struggle on reduced voltages, especially ignition systems, lights & computers.
- Starter motors overheat and fail as result of low voltage and high current load.
- Alternators fail as a result of working longer at higher output and overheating.
The cost of allowing battery sulphation to occur is far above the cost of installing FAB.
